From CULTURE & MUSIC The Brighton Festival
05 May - 27 May: For three weeks in May this lively seaside town is turned into an artistic hub, hosting the largest annual arts festival in England.

Now in its 46th year, this imaginative arts festival combines an impressive programme of international music, dance, literature and theatre, with innovative performances that utilise and enhance the landscape of the city. The major events take place in the stunning Regency Dome complex and Brighton's Theatre Royal, but other venues around the town are featured as well.

The well-regarded literature section of the programme regularly features a wide range of authors.

Brighton Festival Fringe transforms the Pavilion Gardens, Jubilee Square and New Road into Fringe City, hosting a full programme of free events - dance, comedy, and street theatre. The Festival opens with a full costume children's parade, participated in by all the town's schools.

Highlights of the 2012 include the opening Children's Parade, led by Festival Director Vanessa Redgrave, Smashed (a juggling tribute to the 'Tanztheater' epic of the great German icon Pina Bausch), the Trisha Brown Dance Company, and the world premiere of dreamthinkspeak's The Rest is Silence, a meditation on Shakespeare's Hamlet, co-commissioned by the Brighton Festival. There is also a packed programme of classical and contemporary music, as well as an outstanding literature festival that will capture the imaginations of festival-goers.
