From CULTURE & MUSIC Buxton Festival
06 July - 22 July Derbyshire. The 17-day-long Buxton Festival is one of Britain's biggest arts festivals. It draws around 35,000 people to the Peak District town each July to watch a number of rarely staged operas, from the baroque period to contemporary pieces, performed in English.

Past coups at the Buxton opera festival have included the UK premières of obscure works by Mozart, Rossini and Handel. A Literary Series runs in tandem with the opera programme, featuring talks by prominent novelists, biographers, political authors and others, and evenings see film screenings and various cultural events.

In the month of August Buxton also hosts the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival of light opera. Now in its 18th year, this light-hearted musical extravaganza has captivated audiences from around the world.
