From TRAVEL Venice Film Festival
30 August - 09 September. Palazzo del Cinema, Venice, Italy.

Founded in 1932 and the oldest film festival in the world, Venice is a cineaste's dream. Set against the glamorous backdrop of the Venice Lido, the Festival is centred on the Palazzo del Cinema, an Art Deco building that was inaugurated in 1937.

With good reason, the festival is considered by authorities to be the first international event of its kind. Some of the greatest stars of the age were present, Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Fredric March, Wallace Beery, Norma Shearer, James Cagney, Ronald Colman, Loretta Young, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, not to forget Italian idol Vittorio De Sica and the great Boris Karloff, remembered for his role as the monster in the first Frankenstein.

The Golden Lion award is awarded to the best film screened at the festival and is one of the most prestigious in international cinema. Recent winners include: Mike Leigh's Vera Drake, Ang Lee'sBrokeback Mountain, Jia Zhangke's Still Life, Ang Lee's Lust, Caution and Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler.

2013 saw the 70th Festival.
