17 December -23 February Vienna, Austria

In Vienna, the ball season reaches its peak in January and February. The old tradition of carnival balls continues to thrive in the city. While some dancers enjoy following the three-quarter time of the waltzes, others may prefer letting loose to a disco beat.

On New Year's Eve, Le Grand Bal starts off the ball season in grand style at the magnificent Imperial Palace. Numerous other famous ball events are held here as well:

The Ball of the Viennese Coffee House Owners (Feburary 8) is one of the most atmospheric. Each year it brings about 5,000 visitors to Vienna's Imperial Palace and into the Redoutensäle. Many of the guests end the night at Café Landtmann, to which they are transported in a fiaker shuttle, true to style.

The Opera Ball (February 7) Each year, the world famous legendary Vienna Opera Ball, the most opulent of all balls, is held at the Vienna State Opera on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday. It evokes breathtaking images – the rustling of ball gowns, fiery musicians and the glitter of the grandest of ballrooms. The entire dance floor is awhirl at the rhythm of a Viennese Waltz, hundreds of couples, all in a synchronized movement and the sparkle of a tiara make for an unforgettable close to the Viennese carnival season. Glamour from the days of old, renowned artists and international celebrities make it a spectacle to behold.
