How healthy is your hospital? Understanding the reasons behind clinical outcomes is a key step in improving patient care.

The results from Dr Foster Intelligence's sixth Hospital Guide show that despite improvements in mortality over time, variations in performance persist. The hospital guide launched with a special edition of Intelligence and in The Daily Telegraph. The report contains analyses of quality, safety and best practice in all NHS acute trusts and includes data from specially developed clinical quality indicators.

"The value of information, and in particular the Hospital Guide, is not just about public accountability. It acts as a catalyst for informed partnerships. Partnerships within clinical teams and between managers and clinicians, in particular, but also with their patients and the wider community," said Dr Jack Tinker, Emeritus Dean at the Royal Society of Medicine.

The report examines trusts' performances in several areas, including mortality, readmissions, patient satisfaction and excess bed days. Results were gathered from Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) data and Dr Foster's annual Hospital Guide questionnaire. A number of top-performing trusts are highlighted as examples of best practice.

About Dr Foster Intelligence:

Dr Foster Intelligence is a public-private partnership that aims to improve the quality and efficiency of health and social care through better use of information.

We make it easier for professionals and the public to access information about health and social care through a range of innovative products and services.

The partnership is a 50/50 joint venture between The Information Centre for Health and Social Care (a special health authority of the NHS) and Dr Foster, a commercial provider of healthcare information.

Dr Foster Intelligence was launched operationally on 13th February 2006. At the launch, Lord Warner, former minister of state (NHS Reform), said,?Better information is vital for health and social care systems to deliver the highest standards of patient and client care in the most effective way.The public have told us that better information is key to them exercising choice and taking more responsibility for their own health. They need this information in a usable form. This creative partnership between The Information Centre for Health and Social Care and Dr Foster will help to establish an information market which will empower managers, frontline staff and the communities they serve. The key beneficiary will be the public.?

The Dr Foster Unit at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine has developed pioneering methodologies that enable fast, accurate identification of potential problems in clinical performance ?and areas of high achievement.
