The importance of data security and confidentiality is one of the issues that PRIMIS (Primary Care Information Services) is addressing in a new training module. Information governance is one of a number of new training topics that PRIMIS is delivering to its facilitators as part of its programme to improve information management skills and computer use by GPs and primary care staff.

PRIMIS, which is funded by the NHS Information Authority, offers a free training programme to facilitators who are employed by primary care trusts to work with practices in improving the quality of the data held on their clinical computer systems. The PRIMIS training covers topics such as change management, read codes, data analysis and interpretation, and MIQUEST, which is the software used to extract data from GP computer systems. The latest additions to the PRIMIS curriculum cover specialist facilitation skills and action planning for practices, in addition to information governance, which PRIMIS expects to be of interest not only to its facilitators, but also to a variety of people involved in health informatics services.

The PRIMIS training on information governance will focus on the importance of relevant legislation and professional guidelines on confidentiality and data security, as they relate to PRIMIS projects within primary care organisations. This will include the practical issues involved in information governance such as audit trails, virus checking and back-ups of data, as well as the importance of the confidentiality agreements that all practices sign before any data are extracted from their systems for analysis and feedback by PRIMIS.

'Action Planning for Change', another PRIMIS training topic provides facilitators with an understanding of change management theory and techniques. It will help them to work with practices in identifying and agreeing priorities for action plans to improve data quality and information use to support local and national initiatives.

The facilitation skills group training sessions offered by PRIMIS give facilitators the chance to understand the core competencies of the facilitator role, which include encouraging participation, dealing with different behaviours, and motivating people. Exercises have been developed that look at ways to improve communication and listening skills, and to create a positive atmosphere for discussion, planning meetings, reviewing and reflecting on progress.

The PRIMIS team of learning consultants is also in the process of developing a training module that will deal with the topic of getting the best out of primary care data. This module will help practices to understand how primary care data can support the work of a primary care trust, and how to use their data effectively to improve patient care.

As with all PRIMIS training topics, the new modules will follow the 'adult learning approach' adopted by PRIMIS, which builds on facilitators? existing knowledge and skills, and enables them to identify and tackle their individual learning and development needs.
