Country of origin: UK
Click for Full Details: www.patientopinion.org.ukPatient Opinion is a service that tells the public what people are saying about local health services and allows people to share story with one another. Users of this website will be able to:
- See what patients are saying about their health care
- Add story so that others can learn from their experience
- Rate the care they received at hospital
Patient Opinion was founded by Paul Hodgkin a GP in Sheffield who wanted to make the wisdom and insights of patients, available to the NHS. He felt the old ways of doing this ? inviting a patient to sit on a working party or carrying out a survey ? did not work very well so he devised Patient Opinion as a way for thousands of patients to both share their own experience and gain support form others.
Patient Opinion is managed by a team headed by Paul Hodgkin and has its own independent board. It is entirely separate from the NHS and is structured as a company limited by shares.
The initial phase of Patient Opinion was funded by the Department of Health and South Yorkshire Strategic Health Authority. From 2006 Patient Opinion will be funded by selling data back to hospitals
As well as allowing everyone to see what patients are saying about their services, it also offers a way to feed the experience of patients back to the NHS so that their insights and ideas can be put to good use. They hope that every year many tens of thousands of patients will share their experience over Patient Opinion. They will then analyse what they are saying and sell the key themes to hospitals and Primary Care Trusts (PCTs). All data is anonymised so that individuals? identities are protected.
