A King’s Fund report, Medical Revalidation: From Compliance to Commitment, says doctors are receiving mixed messages about the purpose of revalidation.

All could identify potential benefits, particularly the developmental opportunities, but there was some cynicism about the overarching purpose of assuring doctors’ fitness to practise.

King’s Fund assistant director in leadership management Vijaya Nath said: ‘[Revalidation] is too often seen as a tick-box exercise when it could be used as a powerful tool to drive professional development and improve organisational culture.

‘Leaders play a critical role supporting doctors to work in this way so they are motivated to improve patient care when “no one is watching”.
