Experts are calling for a “revolution” in how primary care is organised with more clinical services being provided by pharmacies in order to survive, according to a new report.

The report Future of Primary Care published by the National Primary Care Network (NPCN) – a group of more than 500 healthcare professionals from across primary care – says a complete primary care overhaul is necessary.

The report, based on discussions held at a recent NPCN quarterly meeting of healthcare leaders and clinicians on the topic of future models of primary care, says there is a widely-held desire to turn pharmacy into one of the key providers of community care alongside GP practices.

Although the report shows different opinions between GPs, nurses, dentists, commissioners, pharmacists, and optometrists, there is consensus that the current model of primary care is unsustainable and that a “revolution” is needed.
