Predicting adult obesity from childhood obesity

Country of origin: UK

Young children are dependent on their care providers—parents and teachers—to cultivate healthy lifestyle behaviors that are associated with reduced chronic diseases. Childhood obesity is complex, and it would be naïve to consider the only influence on children to be the childcare environment; however, children spend a great deal of time in these environments, and childcare facilities should be pinnacles of health and places where families know that children are receiving the best care for the short and long term. The number of published studies in this age group has increased exponentially, demonstrating an increase in scientific, practitioner, and clinical awareness of the importance of these interventions. The purpose of this review of literature was to understand if obesity and behavioral interventions in the childcare setting could be effective at improving health behaviors and outcomes in young children.
