Vasectomy Not Associated With Prostate Cancer

July 2017

Cancer

Country of origin: USA

The authors of this meta-analysis evaluated the association between vasectomy and the risk of prostate cancer in 53 studies including almost 15 million men. There was a weak association found between vasectomy and prostate cancer in cohort studies with a low risk of bias and a nonsignificant association in case–control studies. The inclusion of studies with a moderate to high risk of bias resulted in effect estimates being moved further from the null. There was no significant association between vasectomy and high-grade prostate cancer, advanced prostate cancer, or fatal prostate cancer. The absolute increase in lifetime risk of prostate cancer attributed to vasectomy was estimated to be 0.6% with a population-attributable fraction of 0.5%.
