Long working hours as a risk factor for atrial fibrillation

July 2017

Heart Disease

Country of origin: Europe

Individuals who worked long hours were more likely to develop atrial fibrillation than those working standard hours. Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and contributes to the development of several adverse health outcomes, such as stroke, heart failure, and multi-infarct dementia. Cardiovascular and respiratory disease, hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy are risk factors for atrial fibrillation. Additionally, findings from observational studies have been used to suggest that maintaining a lifestyle that reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease—avoidance of obesity, smoking and heavy alcohol consumption—may also have a positive impact on rates of atrial fibrillation.
